Why tooth-colored fillings

Composite fillings are the standard restoration here. They are bonded directly to the tooth, require less removal of healthy structure than older amalgam techniques, and are matched to the natural shade of your tooth so the repair reads as part of the smile rather than a visible patch.

The work is conservative. Modern composite materials and bonding techniques allow Dr. Lina to remove only what needs removing and rebuild the tooth in a way that supports its remaining structure rather than relying on mechanical retention.

What to expect

Most fillings are completed in a single appointment. Dr. Lina removes the decay or damaged structure, prepares the cavity, layers in tooth-colored composite, and shapes and polishes the result by hand. Local anesthesia is used to keep the procedure comfortable.

The shade match matters. The composite is selected to align with your tooth color, and the surface is finished so it catches light the way enamel does. A well-done filling, in time, becomes invisible.

When fillings are a good fit

Fillings are appropriate for small to moderate cavities, chipped edges where the underlying tooth is otherwise healthy, and replacement of failed older restorations. They are not appropriate for cases where the cavity has progressed too deeply or compromised too much structure: in those cases an inlay, onlay, or crown is the right answer.

Dr. Lina assesses each tooth individually and is candid about which restoration fits the case.

Questions

Frequently asked.

Do you offer mercury-free fillings?

Yes. Fillings here are tooth-colored composite, not amalgam. Composite is bonded to the tooth, requires less removal of healthy structure, and reads as part of the tooth rather than a visible repair.

How long do composite fillings last?

Well-placed composite fillings generally last seven to ten years or longer. Longevity depends on the location of the filling, the size of the cavity, bite, and habits like clenching or grinding.

Can old amalgam fillings be replaced?

Yes. Older silver-colored amalgam fillings can be replaced with tooth-colored composite for cosmetic reasons or when the original filling has failed. Dr. Lina discusses whether replacement is appropriate or if watching the existing filling is the better answer.
